Electrolyte Imbalance Associated with Aminoglycosides - An Experimental study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Aim: To evaluate the electrolyte imbalance associated with the use of two important Aminoglycosides (Amikacin and Gentamicin) in experimental rabbit model. Gentamicin and Amikacin 5mg/kg/day and 15mg/kg/day respectively were continued for seven days in two different groups i.e., Group G (Gentamicin treated group) and Group A (Amikacin treated group) along with Control Group (Group C) being on simple isotonic saline for the same period. Blood samples from ear veins were collected at 0 (before therapy), 3 rd and 7 th day and analyzed for BUN, Serum Creatinine, Sodium, Potassium and Calcium. Biostatistical analysis at the end of the study showed that there was a significant decrease in serum sodium, potassium and calcium levels in both Gentamicin and Amikacin groups when compared with control group. There was no significant change in blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine before and after the treatment for 07 days. So it is concluded that serum electrolytes should be monitored while treating the patients with Aminoglycosides and other antibiotics and corrective measures should be adopted accordingly. Patients who are prone to electrolyte imbalance should be observed carefully by the healthcare providers to manage the patients more efficiently.

Antimicrobial-induced Electrolyte and Acid-Base Disturbances
Antimicrobials are one of the most widely prescribed classes of therapeutic agents. Although adverse effects of antimicrobials are generally minimal and reversible, serious sequelae can sometimes remain, such as unusual forms of renal failure, acid base disturbance and electrolyte abnormalities. Many antimicrobials, especially vancomycin or aminoglycosides, are associated with development of ac...
متن کاملAcid-base and electrolyte abnormalities in patients with acute leukemia.
Disturbances of acid-base balance and electrolyte abnormalities are commonly seen in patients with acute leukemia. Our study aimed at illuminating the probable pathogenetic mechanisms responsible for these disturbances in patients with acute leukemia admitted to our hospital. We studied 66 patients (24 men and 44 women) aged between 17 and 87 years old on their admission and prior to any therap...

Background: The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of electrolyte imbalance in hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Moreover, the correlation of this condition with Apgar score is evaluated. Methods: This prospective observational hospital-based study was conducted on 75 neonates affected by asphyxiation. Immediately (within ...
متن کاملHypomagnesemia in a department of internal medicine.
BACKGROUND Hypomagnesemia is frequently encountered in hospitalized patients. The aim of this study was to determine the underlying causes of hypomagnesemia as well as the clinical and biochemical characteristics, and concomitant electrolyte and acid-base abnormalities in patients with decreased serum magnesium (Mg(2+)) levels in an internal medicine clinic. METHODS We prospectively studied a...
متن کاملThe Renal Lesions of Electrolyte Imbalance
Potassium depletion in rats augments the specific renal lesions of phosphate loading. Since it has been shown that phosphate loading increases the specific cardiac lesions of potassium deficiency (12), it is concluded that the similar types of electrolyte imbalance (potassium depletion-phosphate load) act conversely in the two organs.
